There are different models of air conditioners that are being developed every day but the cheapest and the most eco-friendly one is the Snowbreeze. It is also very efficient and easy to make at home. It was invented in Delhi three years ago by a 71 year old ex-journalist, M B Lal. It has attracted a lot of media attention so that the central government has decided to fund for the project.
Delhi is known for its really bad weather and the summer is unbearable. Mr. Lal thought of the idea on a very hot day when there was no power and he was really thirsty. He used a very simple concept where the air gets chilled when it passes through a cooling agent. Having this idea in his mind, he converted his dessert cooler into an air conditioner. To convert the dessert cooler to an air conditioner, he used a metal sheet, copper wire and a water pump. These were the only three elements that he had used.
With the help of his local mechanic he started working on his idea. He took a box and made spiral grooves with the wire. He installed metal sheets inside the box and placed a box of ice. He used a small but powerful fan on one side of the box and when the air spiraled around and escaped out, it was chilled.
Many neighbors started using Snowbreeze. It consumes less electricity than a normal air conditioner and it does not harm the environment in any way. The major advantage is the cost. Building it would cost the consumers a lot lesser than buying a new air conditioner or fixing their old ones. This started as a simple prototype and become a full fledged working mechanism.
Consumers need seven to eight kilograms of ice to make the Snowbreeze run for an entire night. An average refrigerator can make that amount of ice in a day. If you need it to run for extended hours then all you need to do is contact the ice vendor. The ice can be bought and stored in insulated boxes. Any middle class family can afford it and this mechanism will bring down your electricity bill easily during the summer season. Snowbreeze is a dual purpose mechanism. It can be used as a dessert cooler and also as an air conditioner. It can bring down the temperature of a room by 7 degree Celsius and also dehumidify the room. The total unit would cost only about 5000 Rs.
The Government funded 1, 10,000Rs for this project. The great part about this is that Mr. Lal has not patented his invention. Anyone can make the prototype anywhere and anyhow they want. Plus they can order for this green mechanism online in www.greenairconditioner.org . The air conditioner that is sold in the market is a great threat to our environment and I am very sure that this invention is going to be a huge success and the prototype will be made into a sophisticated model very soon.

This AC is converted into room heater also by removing the lid of the ice-drum. Suspend a 300 to 500 watt halogen bulb from a bar resting on its rim, with its frame tilted inward, in the upper half of the drum, filling the lower 40% of it with water and leaving a gap of half to one inch between the water and the bulb-frame. Then switch on the system.
Warm air will start blowing into the room within 10 minutes. The warming up period could be reduced to five minutes or less if, to start with, you put pre-heated water in the drum.
Elderly people with limited means need not die of heat or cold for lack of facilities to cope with the weather and power breakdowns. Invented by an 80-years old man in similar circumstances, Mini-Snowbreeze is acheap but effective air conditioner which can run on an inverter and keep a small room cool and dehumidified for eight hours with “free” ice from the family fridge (Cost Rs.2,500-$50 for mini Snowbreez AC).
It should bring down the temperature in a 150 sq ft room by 10 degree C or even more. It can run on an inverter since it is powered by a 12" exhaust fan of 70 watts. It can be freely used both as an air conditioner or a desert cooler by merely rolling it in and out of a window and pressing the right button. Briefly explained, it works like this: If you pass room air through a set of open ended aluminium pipes loaded with ice, it comes out of the unit 8oC to 10oC cooler in a fast and thick stream which is quickly distributed in the room by a ceiling fan.
